WSJ Best Wine List Recognizes Local Favorite

Vin48 Restaurant Wine Bar, Avon, Colo.

It’s always a good sign when restaurant professionals are regular patrons of a dining establishment. It was a Colorado restaurateur and wine director who alerted me to the list at Vin48, where wine director Greg Eynon marks up his bottles between 200% and 250% over wholesale (versus the 300% to 400% that is all too commonplace).

Wine professionals are particularly keen on the grower Champagne section, said Mr. Eynon, who prices them quite reasonably in hopes of attracting interest from nonprofessionals. For example, the lovely Marie-Courtin Résonance Extra Brut, $34 wholesale, is $73 on the list. “We’re not a program that likes to sit on inventory,” said Mr. Eynon, who also offers a number of older bottles at fair prices (he doesn’t increase prices on older wines either) and reasonably priced cultish California Pinots (Kosta Browne, Lioco and Rivers Marie) as well.
