Domaine Jean Féry: A hidden (yet prolific) gem in Burgundy

From: http://www.fery-vin.fr/en/domaine

Allow me to introduce to you our newest Burgundy addition: Domaine Jean Fery & Fils. It seems to be arriving at a perfect time - just when we thought there was no more Burgundy to be found in the state of Colorado! I for one was incredibly relieved and immediately intrigued to learn more about Fery.

The Fery family has had its roots in Burgundy since the 19th century, in a little town called Echevronne between Beaune and Nuits-Saint-Georges. A long line of clog makers, stable hands, berry growers, and blackcurrant wholesalers eventually inspired the family line into winemaking by the mid-20th century with Jean and Marcelle Fery who began making wine seriously in 1959 and then established their own label in 1980. Jean’s son, Jean-Louis, took over in 1988, knowing very little at first about how to grow grapes or even manage a wine business. He was an academic to the core. But he purchased a tractor, hired some help, and figured it out. Jean-Louis built a winery, accumulated more vineyard holdings, and became more passionate about grape growing. In 1994, he reached out to a good friend Alain Meunier (Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron), who helped him understand and execute organic viticultural technique. He began conversion officially in 2008 and was AB certified by 2011. His sons Frédéric and Laurent have been taking over management.

The Fery family have 14 hectares spread among 22 appellations (hence the incredible lineup that just arrived!). Overall, they are very traditional. In addition to organic grape growing, they ferment with native yeasts in the winery. Typically whites are whole cluster pressed, reds are destemmed. They prefer cooler, slower fermentations overall. Each cuvee requires slightly different treatment with regard to new oak, lees stirring (though typically never after MLF is complete), and filtration (though this is often very light).
