The Importance of Place for Spagnol Prosecco

Taken from winery website.

We are very happy to have a new Prosecco producer- a family we feel represents the values of tradition and terroir the really epitomize the foundation that is Old World Wine Co: Spagnol of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG region. Their family has been growing grapes since the early 20th century, but in 1986 decided to bottle themselves under their own label. It is a family affair with father Orazio and son Alberto in the vineyards, along with other sons Stefano and Marco in the cellar. They are small but mighty team of 11 people who represent the land, winery, and administration overseeing 34.5 hectares of estate-owned prime Prosecco hillside sites in Treviso peppering the hamlets of Saccol (Valdobbiadene), San Pietro di Feletto, Solighetto, Collalto and Farra di Soligo.

The Spagnol family harnesses some of the most prized real estate in the historic villages of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene in the Prosecco Hills. Their two most coveted parcels are found in Solighetto di Pieve di Soligo, where the prestigious Prosecco Balbi clone of Glera tipifies the backbone of Conegliano Valdobbiadene plantings, as well as the Col de Sas vineyard upon which the estate was founded. All vineyard work is done by hand and a sustainable approach undertaken to ensure there will be vineyards for a future generation to caretake as well.

We feel these represent a tremendous value for our market — family-owned, hand crafted Prosecco made with intention, respect for the earth, and appreciation for quality at a price that is very competitive. The follow are the wines were just received — descriptions/tech provided by the winery.

Spagnol Col del Sas Prosecco DOCG Conegliano Valdobbiadene Brut NV

The name of this wine derives from the hill, owned by the Spagnol family and known as “Col del Sas” in the town of Valdobbiadene, where it is produced. Col del Sas spumante is produced to express the best qualities of the grapes from the various company vineyards spread throughout the territory of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG. This extraordinarily fine and harmonic Brut is the ultimate exaltation of the character of the Glera grapes. Fermentation off skins. In autoclave according to the Italian Method. Aged at least 60 days. 8 g/l

Note from Consorzio: "Conegliano Valdobbiadene is a spumante DOCG produced exclusively in the hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene, starting with the glera grape variety. The denomination, comprising 15 towns, takes its name from the two main cities of this territory: Conegliano, the cultural centre, where the first Oenological School of Italy is located, and Valdobbiadene, the heart of production in this territory, with its extraordinary vocation and unique beauty, bound together by rows of vineyards. The grapes come from various micro-zones, and with them each cellar creates the cuvèe that becomes the ambassador of its own unique philosophy."

Spagnol Prosecco DOCG Conegliano Valdobbiadene Brut 'Rive di Solighetto' 2020

"Rive di Solighetto is the absolute cru, the wine that we obtain from selected grapes from our vineyards in the areas best suited to this variety in the Cisa hill in Solighetto. These are the grapes that, once individually vinified and subjected to sparkling process, are able to express the very quintessence of our territory. It is a very elegant wine that is outstanding thanks to its perfectly balanced bouquet and taste.” 300 meters, southern facing slopes, Fermentation off skins with maturation in steel tanks, at least 3 months on fine lees, autoclave according to the Italian Method. Aged at least 3 months, 7 g/l

Note from Consorzio: "In the local dialect, the term “rive” indicates the slopes of the steep hillsides typical of this territory. This type of wine highlights the different expressions of Conegliano Valdobbiadene. Rive is often obtained from the steepest vineyards dedicated to grapes originating in a single town or a hamlet of the same, to exalt the characteristics that our territory bestows on the wine. In the denomination there are 43 rive, and each one of them expresses a different combination of soil, exposure, and micro-climate. The Rive production is limited, the grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, and the vintage is indicated on the label.”
